Signs Your Dryer Vent Is Clogged and Why Long Runs Need a Yearly Check

How a dryer vent gets clogged

Every load of laundry sheds lint. Most of it lands in the lint trap, but some slips past and rides the warm air into the vent pipe. Lint is dry, light and flammable, and it sticks wherever the pipe bends, sags or changes size. Over months it builds into a mat that narrows the pipe a little more with every load.

The longer the run, the more places lint has to catch. A short, straight vent behind a dryer in a garage gives it very little to grab. A long vent that climbs a wall, crosses an attic and exits through the roof gives it plenty.

Signs your dryer vent is clogged

  • Clothes take more than one cycle to dry, or come out damp after a normal cycle.
  • The clothes, the dryer or the laundry room feel hotter than they used to.
  • You smell something burnt or musty while the dryer runs.
  • Lint collects around the outside vent hood, or the flap on the hood barely opens when the dryer is on.
  • The lint trap is packed after a single load, or lint piles up behind the dryer or on the laundry floor.
  • Little air comes out of the exterior vent when you hold your hand near it.

Any one of these is a reason to look. Several together usually mean the pipe is restricted somewhere along its length.

Where lint tends to catch

  • Elbows and tight turns, where the air slows down and drops what it is carrying.
  • Sagging sections of flexible pipe, which form a low spot that lint collects in.
  • Joints and seams, where a rough edge gives lint something to hold on to.
  • The roof cap or outside hood, where birds' nests, leaves and a stiff flap can add to the pile.

When the pipe narrows, hot moist air has a harder time leaving. The dryer runs longer to get clothes dry, the machine works harder than it was built to, and the heat has nowhere to go but back into the dryer and the room around it. That is why slow drying is worth treating as a warning and not as a quirk of an old machine.

Why vents over 10 feet need a yearly check

Dryer vents are a leading cause of household fires in California. That is why we recommend a yearly inspection, especially for vents over 10 feet. The farther the air has to travel, the weaker its push gets toward the end of the run, and the easier it is for lint to settle in the middle. Add a few elbows, a section that sags, or a flexible hose that got crushed behind the dryer, and a long vent can clog long before the dryer itself gives you a clear warning.

A yearly look catches a partial blockage while it is still a quick cleaning job instead of a safety problem.

What a professional dryer vent cleaning involves

We use a high-negative-suction sweeper instead of traditional wire brushes. The method does not damage or disconnect your pipe line, and a typical service takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on vent length and complexity. Standard cleaning covers ordinary runs. Deep vent pipe cleaning covers long runs, tight bends and restricted access.

We also do an inspection and safety check. That means looking for blockages, disconnected sections, damaged hoses, poor airflow and the way the exhaust exits the house. Pictures and videos are always provided, so you see what came out of your own vent. As one customer, Steven W., put it: "They take videos and showed me how much crud was in my dryer vent."

What you can do between visits

  • Clear the lint trap after every load, not just when it looks full.
  • Pull the dryer forward now and then and make sure the hose behind it is not crushed or kinked.
  • Watch the outside hood while the dryer runs. The flap should open freely.
  • Replace foil or plastic accordion hoses with smooth-walled pipe where you can, since ridges catch lint more easily.
  • Do not ignore longer drying times. They are the earliest sign you will get.
